3.5 starsI have such mixed feelings for this book. I've been dying to get my hands on it since I read the last page of Fourth Grave and green with envy at the people who got an ARC. Of course, the 3-chapter excerpt they shared a few months before the release didn't help matters at all.So when the mailman finally brought in my copy this morning THREE freaking weeks after it was dispatched if I may add, damn international shipping! I immediately dived into this book. Prior to this, each new Charley book was even better than the last, at least for me. Did Fifth Grave fit the pattern and surpass the awesomeness that was Fourth Grave? I'm extremely sad to say...no. It is still a page-turner but some of the things that happened in this book didn't sit well with me.The plot. It felt all over the place. Charley was going all over the place and the pacing seems hectic. Which brings me to Charley herself. I found her rather irritating in this book. Readers of this series should have a grasp of her personality by now. Mostly fun, quirky and with a topping of ADD. Yet I felt like it was completely over the top and she disregarded Cookie's safety when she brought her in to seduce the guy who later turned out to be a psycho and how she handled the situation later flabbergasted me. And I'm all for her and Reyes getting together but she was on an important case and deadline for crying out loud. Instead of grabbing the photo and heading back out, she and Reyes boink each other and she stays the night?? WTF. Charley handles things irresponsibly. And the almost rape scene at the end. Was it was done to bring Charley down a few pegs? A wake up call? I don't know. But I felt that there could have been another way to accomplish that.I'm not sure how I feel about the Reyes in this book. He feels like a different person. And the proposal at the end floored me as well. I'm still trying to process that. With all that said, I will still be anxiously waiting for Sixth Grave. A lot of new questions and old ones were addressed in this book and I look forward to the direction Darynda will take this book to. ----------------------------------------JULY 2013?! Kill me now.
